TOM Group records HK$1.39 bln in losses for 2008Published: 25 Mar 2009 19:46:59 PSTMar. 26, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Hong Kong-listed TOM Group Ltd, parent of TOM Online and TOM Outdoor Media Group, recorded full-year losses of HK$1.39 billion in 2008, up from HK$331.11 million a year earlier, the Standard reported.The company, controlled by Hong Kong business tycoon Li Ka-shing, suffered a one-time impairment charge of HK$1.25 billion against the carrying value of some older-generation wireless assets.According to the group's latest financial report, its revenue rose 2% from a year earlier to HK$2.73 billion. Profits at the internet division jumped to HK$63 million. The outdoor advertising division recorded loss of HK$75 million last year, compared with a profit of HK$15 million in 2007, due to the tough economic condition.Last year, profits at the publishing division amounted to HK$96 million, up 5% year on year. They strived, through compromises and a responsible attitude, to lift the global economy out of the current recession and find a "stabilizer" for it to guard against further crisis.The fruits this summit yielded made us believe that the G20 summit can be an effective mechanism for coordinating major global economic contradictions, because the 20 countries make up 85 percent of the world's total GDP. The communiqué addressed almost all the issues that had concerned economists worldwide the most before the summit, including injecting capital into the International Monetary Fund (IMF), cutting the salaries of top financial executives, combating tax havens and fending off protectionism. This summit has proven through the rich content of the communiqué the importance of having an effective multilateral negotiation mechanism.The rise of the BRIC countries-Brazil, Russia, India and China-in particular will help to promote changes in the global economic structure. With huge forex reserves in hand, the four countries have won a greater say in deciding where the global economy will head, because the global economy will have to count on their huge forex reserves for salvation if there are no signs of economic pickup in the coming quarters. These emerging markets are expected to lead the global economic recovery, which explains why China had a much larger audience for its presence and voice at the London summit.As an outcome of globalization, economies worldwide are now increasingly entangled with each other, and it is impossible for a single economy to stay intact amid the global economic recession that originated from the U.S. financial crisis. China CIC to pay dividends, not interestPublished: 23 Aug 2009 08:02:02 PSTChina Investment Corp, a $200 billion sovereign wealth fund, has agreed with the Finance Ministry to change the way it pays its funding costs, local media reported Saturday.To fund CIC, the Finance Ministry issued 1.55 trillion yuan ($226.9 billion) worth of special treasury bonds at an annual rate of 4.3 percent in late 2007 to buy foreign exchange from the central bank.This means CIC has to pay about 66.65 billion yuan ($9.76 billion) in interest each year. But due to heavy paper losses from two high-profile overseas investments made before the financial crisis, CIC has been postponing the interest payment to its State shareholder.CIC has reached a consensus with the Finance Ministry to treat the $200 billion as its asset rather than debt, and the firm will pay dividends to the State instead of interest, just like other top State-owned enterprises (SOE), the Economic Observer cited a CIC source.China’s State Asset Supervision and Administration Commission started collecting dividends last month from the 136 central SOEs it oversees, the paper said.SOEs in tobacco, oil, chemical and power industries must pay 10 percent of their capital returns to the State while those in steel, transportation and electronics businesses pay 5 percent.But Beijing has yet to decide how much State financial firms, into which category CIC falls, should pay. The Records showcases a wide range of Zhang's new work from 2008 and 2009 and presents his continuous artistic exploration of people's collective mindset influenced by the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) following his representative Bloodline series.A wide range of installations, sculptures and steel-plate paintings are on display, symbolizing the artist's reflections on his personal memories of daily life in the past 40 years.On the ground of Pace Beijing's grand exhibition hall, stand many cement blocks, each with a bronze object of people's daily life from the recent past on top. "That's why you can always sense a reminiscent mood in my works."Artist Zhang XiaogangIn his steel-plate paintings on display, Zhang moves to connecting the past with the present, which is a new approach from the usuallyretrospective artist. Depicting rooms with old-style furniture and dated household items, Zhang's handwriting accompanies each piece, recording his thoughts on today's everyday life.Zhang has been labeled a "star artist" by the international art world, with items from his Bloodline series frequently auctioned at extraordinarily high prices. In April last year, Bloodline: The Big Family No.3 was sold for $6.1 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong auction.As for the commercial prospects of his new work, Zhang said that he is not overly concerned.
